This year an event was held at
the Swan Castle in Kleve to commemorate the 450th anniversary of
Anne of Cleeves at the Swan Castle
Anne of Cleeves (22 September 1515 – 16 July 1557) was the fourth wife of Henry VIII of England from 6 January 1540 to 9 July 1540. A painting of Anne by Hans Holbien the Younger hangs in The Louvre, Paris.
Anne was the daughter of John III ruler of the Duchy of Kleves. In 1540 Anne was married to Henry VIII of England for political purposes, but the marriage was not successful and was annulled later that year.
Anne received a generous settlement and continued to live in England for the rest of her life. She outlived Henry, who died in 1547, and remained on good terms with his daughter, Mary Tudor. On her death in 1557 Anne was given a royal funeral and was buried in Westminster Abbey, London. |
